The stunning Turning Torso in Malmo, Sweden

Located in Malmö, Sweden, on the Swedish side of the Öresund strait, the HSB Turning Torso is the tallest skyscraper in Sweden and the Nordic countries. At the time the building was completed it was also the tallest skyscraper in Scandinavia, the highest residential structure in the EU and the second tallest residential building in all Europe, the first building being the Triumph Palace in Moscow (264 metre/866 ft).
The Torso Tower was officially opened on the 27 of August,2005 and it is the vision of the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The skyscraper is 190 metres (623 feet) tall and has 54 stories. The name of the building and its design were inspired by a sculpture called Twisting Torso. The sculpture is impressive, made entirely out of white marble created by the same artist- Santiago Calatrava- who is a famous engineer, architect and sculptor.
Malmö really needed a symbol of architectural power so the local politicians initiated a project to develop the urban part of the city. A former symbol of this city was represented by the Kockums Crane that was removed in 2002. It was located near the current place of the Turning Torso and it was called Kockumskranen. This crane was used for shipbuilding and it held powerful references regarding the city`s blue collar roots.
The torso is rendered thanks to the asymmetrical shapes and to other intricate designs. The skyscraper is divided into nine segments of five story pentagons and the topmost segment has an angle of ninety degrees clockwise if you compare it with the ground floor.
All of the floors have a strange pentagonal shape that rotate around the vertical core –and this core is supported by the exterior framework made of steel. The first segments serve as office space for the building. The next segments: three to nine offer 147 luxury apartments that have all the utilities you can imagine.
